Tales of mystery and imagination
Edgar Allen Poe/The Alan Parsons Project (1975)

The well-known Edgar Allen Poe has written some stories that are published under the name "Tales of mystery and imagination". The Alan Parsons Project made a "soundtrack" for some of those stories in 1975.

The soundtrack lists:
  • A dream within a dream
  • The raven
  • The tell-tale heart
  • The cask of Amontillado
  • (The system of) Doctor Tarr and professor Fether
  • The fall of the house of Usher
  • To one in Paradise

The Fall of the House of Usher has 5 parts in its over 15 minutes beauty and was published with To one in paradise on the B-side of the original album. The inner sleeve of the album gives a chronology of Poes life.

The Alan Parsons Project is a symphonic rock band, and the soundtrack is not 19th century at all, although parts are very bombastic and others romantic and suit nice to the stories of Poe. There is, however, an atmosphere of the grotesque and the phantastic in the songs, a certain beat that makes the heart go faster.
My favourite songs are "A dream within a dream", "The Cask of Amontillado", and the Usher stuff.

It seems that not all songs from the soundtrack refer to the book "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" as published in 1919.
