From Hell [soundtrack] (2001)
Music by Trevor Jones
I decided to give the soundtrack from the movie From Hell a different review, because I can focus on the music now .
There are two odd tracks in the soundtrack. The first is being advertised for, and is "The nobodies" by Marilyn Manson, and the second is Bow Belle (Absinthium). The rest is a soundtrack, as usual.
"The Nobodies" is played during end credits in the movie and thus is not really part of the movie. It is also somewhat strange to find a Marilyn Manson track on this soundtrack. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Marilyn Manson, but the track just doesn't fit the movie. The lyrics do, in a way, but the music is out of place. When I play the soundtrack, I usually skip this track.
"Bow belle" is something completely different. The "theme" from this song is used as the opening for "The Compass and the Ruler", but this is the full version. In the movie, this song is played on an ancient record player. That should explain why it sounds so bad, but I've heard real old records (78 rpm) being played on real ancient record players, and that sounds a lot better. Providing you keep it in good condition of course. Nevertheless, this could pass as a song that really is from the 1880s. I don't know if it's really that old (there is no clue on the cover).
Apart from these two odd tracks, the CD has 11 other songs, all film music, and rather dull. Don't get that wrong, it great music to have playing in the background while doing other things like reading a good book, but one song is not much different from the next. Maybe that is because the movie itself is one that has this chocking atmosphere throughout.
But I think the soundtrack might fit a good steampunk game, it does build a certain atmosphere.
