The metamorphosis of the Naglani

Since ancient time, the rumour goes that all pure Naglani can change themselves into a bird. But how can this possibly be? How do they do that?

The Naglani who transform never do this in public. They go to a place where they can’t be seen by passers-by. Then they do transform, and all that is left, is the bird. No trace is left of the Naglan, even the clothes have mysteriously disappeared. And when the bird shapeshifts back, the Naglan is there again, with clothes and all. It is a very strange thing indeed, and to many people it comes close to magic.

The few transformations that have been witnessed, occurred with a bright lighting, but no thunder. In less time than the blink of the eye, the bird had appeared where the Naglan was.
The Naglani themselves claim that it is something in the air that makes them metamorph. They cannot do it at will, but they can try to provoke or postpone the process. They have to change every now and then, it seems to be stronger than the Naglani will. It does scare the Naglani as well, because they never know when the “air is ripe”. The air does not get “ripe” when it is damp. The dry air of the frosted Taycha is excellent air to grow ripe quick.

There have been some tests with Naglani and a modern Blitzer Machine, in Altheizar. When the lightning escaped from the machine, the Naglani should change into birds. The power of the lightning could be regulated, and at the start the power was low. Nevertheless, many Naglani died in the experiment. Not one of them changed into a bird.

As for the birds, many people have wondered what kind of bird the Naglani change into. They are big hunting birds, with dark colours. Some say they may be huge raven or large owls, but they are neither. The Naglani call the birds Aarol, but that is a more or less general word for “Naglan-changed-into-bird”.

The Naglan who metamorphs becomes a bird, but still has an own will. It will have memories, dreams and thoughts, but these are suppressed by the mind of the bird. The birds wants to fly and to eat. The Naglani call this a “free” phase, a phase in which daily life does not matter.
When they concentrate, they can perform certain missions while being Aarol. It is known the Naglani send out Aarol to spy upon their enemies.

Science still does not know what was first: the Naglani-man or the Naglani-bird. Did the man evolve from the bird, or is it the other way around? Or is it a strange way of being with two bodies?
