Regalia

The EmperorIn the Imperial Palace, there is a room where the regalia are shown to the noblemen who visit the palace. These regalia represent the power of the Emperor. On official occasions, the Emperor has to carry the regalia with him, or use them. Each of the regalia represents a certain power the Emperor is supposed to have.

The Sword
The sword stands for military power. The emperor is head of the army and the fleets, and thus has his sword to symbolically represent that power. However, the sword that is used now is not the official Imperial Sword. That Sword, made of gold, silver and bronze, decorated with fine gold work and gemstones, has been lost since 1215 when it was thrown in the hot mouth of Mount Funins by Salamandrian freedom fighters.
The new sword is a gift from the army, and it is made of gold and red Korunths. It is 4 feet long, hollowed to keep the weight down, and not suited for fighting - it is purely decorative and symbolic.

The Orb
An orb is a small sphere that represents the world. The emperor holds the orb in his hand, like he rules the world. In Daleth, the orb is a glass sphere, 5 thumbs high. It is decorated with a gold "basket" on the outside. Inside the orb is a visible gas. This orb represents the world of dreams - it symbolises that the emperor is the ruler of dreams.
It is said a good emperor can foresee the future in the way the gas moves in the orb. This moving has probably to do with changes in temperature. Others will tell that if you lie when holding the orb, the gas will turn dark. It never turned dark, because emperors are good people and always tell the truth - that is what the emperors say.
There are spheres similar to that of the orb, they are found in the Unknown Territories. The sphere from the orb is thus supposed to originate from the Unknown Territories as well.

The One Law Script
To represent the law, the emperor holds the Script of the One Law. This was originally a piece of parchment rolled on a (hollow) silver rod. On the parchment was the text of the one law. During the centuries, the parchment disintegrated in the hands of the emperor. It has been replaced with silver foil, that has been scripted with the original words of the One Law. During this alteration, the rod itself was decorated with red Korunths.

The Crown
Not one item is so well known to represent the function of the emperor as the crown. The imperial crown stands for wisdom.
Other famous crowns in Daleth are The Glass Crown, The Queens Crown of Daleth, the Headless Crown of the Weslanan and the Salamandran Crown.

The Throne
The throne is of course the seat of the emperor. Therefore it symbolises the land and the home. To make the symbolism stronger, the original throne can he found in the home of the emperor, Haimothli. If the throne falls in the hands of the enemy, Daleth has fallen. Thus, in times of war, the throne is very well protected - with or without the emperor on it.

The Mantle
The mantle is woven in the colours of the gods, and represents the protection of the gods over the emperor. It also stands for the care the emperor in his turn should give to his people. The original mantle is said to have been a gift from Gräins, but if that is true, no one will ever know. The original has worn old, and bit by bit a new mantle has been created until there was no fabric of the old one left.

The Necklace
A seldom spotted part of the regalia is the necklace, that the Emperor wears almost under the mantle and the sash. The necklace is a tight ring around the emperors neck, and is so wide the emperor can hardly turn his head whenever he wears it in the traditional fashion. The tight necklace should remind the emperor of the fact that after all, he is no more than a slave of his people, and the people are his slaves - an excellent balance.
Rumours have it that the necklace used to be a rope, that could be pulled when the emperor made a mistake, and thus represents death as well. Or, so others have it, the rope was the symbol of the emperors power to call someone to the gallows.

The Spoon
A spoon belongs to the regalia as well. The spoon is the symbol of the emperor feeding his people. The emperor, having no more than two hands, hardly ever carries the spoon. It usually is carried on a pillow by a servant. The emperor uses the Spoon to literary feed his people when he visits the ill and the hungry. It is said that food coming from the royal spoon is clear of all poison and traces of rotting food disappear. The taste is made better by eating the food from the royal spoon, too. Or so the people say who ever tasted it. Scientist never found any truth in these stories.

The Ring
There is only one royal ring and that is on the left hand of the emperor. The ring represents the royal birth, and is worn in honour to the father and mother of the emperor (of course, the former emperor is usually dead when his or her son or daughter is wearing the ring).
The ring is round and has no gemstones on it. There are some traces of damage on the outside, and on the inside of the ring some ancient runes are written. When hold close to the fire and then carried into a dark room, the runes seem to glow.
A paleographist who has studied the ring had the following explanation for this mysterious effect:
The ring used to have a small box on it. That box carried poison. A bit of the poison is still stuck in the runes, where they have a chemical reaction with the silver of the ring. By the way, the runes are written in normal writing, but the use of the ring has damaged them. It also looks like someone has tried to get rid of the runes on purpose. They spell in perfect Sudzian: "Made in Pyrallis, 1777".
This scientist was promoted to Professor of the Sudzian Language and Culture at the University of Ildritz. He never made it in there, because he was sent on an expedition to Thirun to decipher some Sudzi runes there. He was never seen again. A Dernian trader claims to have bought the scientist's clothes from the royal guards at the market of Diwán.

The Sash
Like all other royals and noblemen, the emperor carries a sash. This royal sash is made of very fine fabric and is made in the colours of the Dalethian flag: red and gold. The emperor carries the sash over both shoulders. The sash is a symbol for service, the service the emperor does for the land that was given to him.
