The Fourth Opening of the Portal The Portals are always open, it can be any time that someone or something passes through. The counting of the Opening of Portals only relates to the short periods in which hundreds of humans came through the portals and arrived in Daleth. The Portals have this short period of increased activity, usually during a few years, starting with a few humans more than normal, peeking with dozens of people more and then fading back to normal. Another important aspect of the portals increased activity is that more humans arrive in Daleth in good health. Normally, over 50% of the humans arriving through the portal dies within a year - these deaths have no other explanation than the fact that the victims have arrived through the portal and are unable to live a Dalethian life - the shock is too big. Those who stay alive usually end up insane. In de periods of increased activity, only 5% dies within the year and only 10% in the next five years. Insanity hardly is an issue. It might be that people feel less lonely on a new world when there are more people with the same background. When exactly the fourth opening started is not known, the start is usually set in 1800 AFO. In the early stage of the fourth opening, the people who came in must already have an idea how to manipulate the portals. They were not found on the fields, dizzy and confused like other new arrivals. They mingled into Dalethian society to prepare the coming of their people or even went back through the portal in order to help the army of the New Poorters through the Portals. Planned military, the invasion of the New Poorters was not clear until it was nearly too late. The New Poorters had the advanced technology to manipulate the Portals. They could travel to and from their own world and take back anything they liked. The Portal they used was that of Hailaiga, a bit inconveniently out of centre. They planned to attack Doravor in Ciniz because they thought that was a better and stronger Portal, and more central in Daleth. Whether there is a Portal in Doravor is not known, if it is active is unsure. However, the New Poorters were convinced they could reactivate any Portal that ever had been on the world, and one of them was supposed to be in Doravor. The New Poorters went to the Emperor in Ildritz and offered their knowledge if the Emperor was willing to give them Doravor when the Imperial Army conquered Ciniz. The Emperor was all ears, because he had political difficulties with Ciniz. The issue of Ciniz has been a political problem ever since the small country claimed to be independent from the Empire in 1485. The most recent imperial action was to propose a marriage between Fayan, the Count of Ciniz, and the Princess of Daleth. Fayan declined and married Nina Lomar, a farmers daughter from Ciniz, instead. The Emperor was not amused and declared war against Ciniz. He managed to ban the count from his country, but Fayans son Yzabrân returned to Ciniz and claimed it. In the battle that followed, Yzabrân killed the heir to the Dalethian throne, Prince Wasyl. These reasons to take revenge on Ciniz was enough for the large scaled war. The Emperor set his men and women on the right spots, tried to mingle his men among the allies of Ciniz through marriage and other political moves. For Ciniz was a small country, but had many allies in the rest of Daleth, especially in the Weslanan. Both Ciniz and Unvar were besieged during the war that followed in 1838, a few weeks later Klainskrizzon was blocked from the rest of the world. The Naglani, a very loyal ally of Ciniz, were massacred in Topomeir, Swartiz and Ildritz, among other places. However, 30 years of manipulation and political troubles focussing on war took its toll. Trade came to a halt, crops did not flourish and the harvests were poor. Mills were destroyed, houses burnt down. Hunger and diseases spread through the settlements. The people of Daleth turned against their Emperor and joined Ciniz in the war. Even the people from Dernian Landis suffered from the war and sent an army to end it. Things got worse when the New Poorters decided they were so close to their target, that they no longer needed the help from the Emperor. New Poorters who had infiltrated the Imperial Army stood up against their comrades and killed them. However, not all New Poorters turned against the Imperial Army. Some of them stayed loyal to their Dalethian friends and the Emperor, others fled to the side of Ciniz in order to fight against their kinsmen who -in the opinion of many- destroyed Daleth and Airtha with it with their advanced techniques, like they had destroyed their home planet. The war against the New Poorters ended with the Battle of Hailaiga. It was won by Ciniz and its many allies. The New Poorters were sent back to where they came from, except for the ones who had fought on the side of either the Emperor (against the New Poorters) or the Cinizian Allies and proved thus to be loyal to Daleth. The Keepers of Doravor will make sure the Portals will never be abused again. The Emperor committed suicide on the battlefield of Hailaiga when he realised the New Poorters had used his grieve and mourning in order to lay hands on Daleth. He could not handle the shame of the betrayal and let himself fall into the sword that before had killed his son. When the battle was over and the dead burned or buried, the armies went to the ruins of Ildritz and declared Tadeusz II, grandson of the Emperor and son of Tadeusz I, to be the next Emperor of Daleth. Tadeusz I was the official Emperor right after the death of his father, but his role in the war made him unsuitable for the job. He has reigned for 23 days. Under the pressure of the Cinizian Allies, Tadeusz II installed the Institute for Research on New Technological Developments. This institute should investigate the influences of any new technology on the society, environment and economy of Daleth and its neighbouring states. Related topics: |
