Music

Music is a part of life all over Daleth. Almost anyone knows how to play at least one musical instrument, or sings. Music in public spaces or rooms is usually a social event; when a musical band starts to play, many people join the music with singing, hand clapping, whistling, or playing any available instrument, and starts dancing to the popular songs. The songs are a mix of love songs, legends and lullabies, or written especially for an occasion by a poet (songs and poetry have the same name in large parts of Daleth).
Sacred music started as the music played by priests on religious holidays, but is now popular under the noble men and women of Ildritz and their likes. Sacred music is not a social event, and the audience does not take part in the play, they just sit and listen. The songs coming with the sacred music are arcane mutterings, but when closely listened to it, the words form prayers and ancient magic formula to please the gods.
In the salons of Ildritz, the dancing music is also popular. This is music without words (sometimes called silent music). The music is giving a rhythm to dance to. Many dances have been designed since this silent music hit the streets of Ildritz. Originally, the silent music came from Salamandran, where it was imported from the Wythviz-folk.
Rather new is the music to the theatershows, silent music as a decoration of the play, but also real songs that are sometimes put into place of plain spoken word in the play.

Musical instruments are usually expensive, and having one gives a kind of flair to the owner. Palaces do have musicrooms, where all kinds of instruments are exposed to the guests. Many palace-inhabitant doesn’t know how to play the instruments. In case of a salon, players are hired.
Flutes are popular by travelling artists, but the bagpipes are even better. The bagpipes have two or three flutes, and the bag is pumped with air with the arm, so the mouth is free to sing along. Instruments with snares as the lyre are popular for the same reason: it is possible to sing along with the music.
